Vermilion is ground with water, and then put into a vessel; after it has been placed in the vessel, the vessel is filled up with water, and then put aside. When the water becomes clear, pour it off. Then, when the water has been poured off, the white of egg may be added; and so the mixture can be used for illuminating. If you mix it with white, it makes a rose-colour; and if you mix it with indigo, it makes brown.
