88 - A Deeper Oriental Garnet
Take 2 oz of ground rock crystal, as before, and 5½ oz of ordinary minium. Mix them together, and to each ounce of material, add 3 grains of prepared Piedmont manganese. In all, there will be 15 grains [of manganese]. Blend these thoroughly and mix in 4 grains of prepared zaffer. Put it in a fire resistant crucible, which has a space of more than a finger at the top, because this material boils more than the others do. Lute it as usual, like the other crucibles, and then cook this paste in a pottery fumace, or purpose-built kiln. You will have an oriental garnet colour with a most beautiful violet tint.
