89 - Another Beautiful Garnet
Grind 2 oz of rock crystal impalpably as usual. Add 5 oz of ordinary minium. To each ounce of this material, give a proportion of 4 grains of prepared Piedmont manganese, as described, which will be 1 pwt and 4 grains [of manganese] in all. lnto this, mix 6 grains of prepared zaffer. Blend all these things together well, and place them in a crucible that will resist the fire. Leave a space of more than a finger's width at the top, since this material boils, and swells quite a bit. Lute it well, let it dry, and then put it in a pottery furnace to cook, or else in a purpose-built kiln. lt will become the color of true oriental garnet, and be more beautiful and sightly than any of the other garnets.
