94 - Milk White Enamel [Lattimo]
As an example, take 6 lbs of enamel base material [chapter 93] and mix it with 2 pwt of prepared Piedmont manganese. Put this material in a crucible glazed with white glass, and into a furnace, with a clear smokeless fire using oak wood. Leave this material to melt and clarify. As soon as the work is well fused and consolidated, throw it into clear water, and then return it to the crucible. When it fuses and clarifies, again throw it into water, and return it to the crucible. When it is fused and clarified throw it in water, and return it to the crucible to fuse and clarify a third time.
Throw it into water, return it to the crucible, and leave it to clarify thoroughly. Take out a proof, seeing if it is as white as it should be. If it is greenish, give it a little manganese
shown previously. It will become milk white, which is tried and true for enameling over gold and other metals, as the goldsmiths do.
