White flake is usually had of the colourmen in a prepared state, under the name of flake white: being levigated and mixed up with starch, and most frequently with white lead, or much worse sophistications. Whoever, therefore, would be certain of using this pigment pure, should procure the white flake in lumps, as it is brought over; and levigate it themselves: washing it over also; and, if it be necessary, in order to the making it work more freely, they may grind it up afterwards with starch, in the proportion they shall find on trial most suitable to their purpose.,
