Remarks: 
intermediate glue layer between oil layers,Exact composition of common varnish not given in copies we presently have available of Armenini. Other contemporary sources usually mean a linseed oil varnish. As resins, different materials were mentioned. Merrifield gives recipes for a common varnish from the Marciana ms. that consists of linseed oil and Greek pitch (Merrifield, Vol. 2, p. 607.) Merrifield has a whole section on common varnish on pages cclxiv-cclxvi. There besides Greek pitch, mastic, colophony, Venice turpentine are mentioned.
