I have had occasion to analise a portion of the ground of a picture painted by Titian, painted on wood; this ground was composed of plaster of Paris, with starch and paste, but no glue or size, flour paste being used instead of gelatin. In the beginning of the art, the cloths were prepared in the same manner as the panels with a distemper ground and generally the pictures of Paul Veronese were painted on such cloths.
