Mr. Woodsides used soap in the white lead that he painted the capes of 'Firemen's' equipment, which long remained serviceable and elastic. If I should prepare other canvas, I would first grind off the lumps from the canvas by wetting it and using the pumice stone. Then follow with the white lead mixed with soap, one half pound of brown soap to four pounds of white lead - perhaps two coats and using the pumice stone. The spatula should be employed to procure a level surface.
