I procured Russia sheeting; after stretching it on the frame, I gave it a coat of the following; a mixture of white lead ground in skimmed milk to about the consistence of paste; I then used the pumice stone to flatten, or destroy all inequalities of the thread. I next followed with a second coat of color and in order to distinguish it from the first I put a little vermilion in the mixture to cover an old picture (if it is not cracked) in order to paint a new subject.
