Measure shells of eggs in quantity and make them boil in clear water until it drops by half. Then you remove the shells, and return the water to the fire. Take filings of iron and grindings from the milling of galls so that these things are 2 ounces, roche alum half ounce, gum Arabic, very strong lye, and human urine so that the gum and the water be two ounces. Make it boil till it drops to half and this is good black dye.
