Mattheus Verheijden (1700–1778?) was a known painter. From this text it seems that he has also produced etchings and mezzotints, although he is not mentioned in Waller 1974. Unruled oblong notebook for music annotations. P. [1] has a floral border printed in black from a woodcut with additional hand-colouring. A putto holding an oblong book with a musical score is standing on top of the border. The following typographic text is printed within the border: “[above] MUSICA DIS CURAE ES[T?]”; [below] “t’Amsterdam, by Paulus Matthysz. // in’t Musyc-boek, is alderley gelinieert Papier en Musyc te koop.” The texts are written by one hand, but on different occasions. With paging in pen and ink in an eighteenth-century hand. The last numbered page is p. 290. The four folia of pp. 89–94 were written but later cut out, remnants with text are left. The folium with pp. 103–104 is a little smaller than the other pages and is pasted onto the left side of p. 105. The paging jumps from ‘260’ on the left to ‘270’ on the right of an opening without any folia missing in between. An unknown number of folia of which little more than thin stubs are left is cut out between p. [327] and p. 328]. P. [332] is the back pastedown. Contains recipes for painting and printmaking; pp. 131, 141, 173–244, [291]–[327] are blank. Pp. 95–146: recipes for etching ground and stopping-out, commented references to and quotations after Bosse and Lairesse; Bosse (Amsterdam 1662) [No. 042.26]; Lairesse (Amsterdam 1707) [No. 177]. Pp. 171–172: instructions for mezzotint, partly after Lairesse. All other pages relate to painting materials and techniques, with some information about restoring painting. (Source: Ad Stijnman)
